Political activist speaks at IEC

Mr Kathrada delivered an insightful speech about his experiences in prison

Mr Ahmed Mohamed ‘Kathy’ Kathrada visited the Islamic Educational Centre (IEC) yesterday (Saturday) afternoon.

Mr Kathrada is a political activist, freedom fighter, struggle veteran, member of the Passive Resistance Committee, a Rivonia trialist and regarded by many as one of the last of the iconic historical figures in South Africa. He spent 26 years in prison and was a companion of the late Nelson Mandela.

A dinner was hosted in the evening, giving Mr Kathrada the opportunity to deliver an insightful speech about his experiences in prison, both good and bad. It was an informative and enlightening talk, even more significant because of the fact that the country has just held its fifth democratic elections on the anniversary of 20 years of democracy after the end of apartheid.
