Appreciated on Bosses Day

In a bid to express gratitude to Estcourt Hospital's employers, the hospital's entertainment committee, with assistance from staff who were acknowledged for Secretaries Day, prepared a surprise for them

Managers and supervisors have a huge responsibility of providing leadership to all employees under their supervision towards achieving the objectives of the institution. These leaders often strive to rise above the situation at all times to ensure that an efficient and effective service is provided and nobody seems to acknowledge and appreciate that.

In a bid to express gratitude to Estcourt Hospital’s employers, the hospital’s entertainment committee, with assistance from staff who were acknowledged for Secretaries Day, prepared a surprise for them just after an extended management meeting. While the meeting was in progress, preparations were underway in the Nurses Home, which was the venue for the event. Just after the meeting, all managers and supervisors were asked to proceed to the venue, unaware of what was to take place. To their surprise the venue was decorated and everybody was clueless about what was about to happen.

The Programme Director said the event was a surprise for Bosses Day and to acknowledge all present for their contribution and hard work for the patients and clients to get the best possible service, including clinics.
The guest speaker for the day was David Allen who is an Estcourt resident. He is also a Co-director at Challenge Tours, where he runs various leadership courses.

David has visited various countries where he has delivered motivational speeches in places such as Boston, Harvard, Stellenbosch, Nestle head office and ERGO in Germany, just to name the few. His speech focused on leadership skills and its significance in the smooth running of any organisation. He stressed to leaders present that rising to the occasion is vital, even when faced with challenges, because employees look up to them to set an example as leaders. In his engagement with managers and supervisors he emphasised that they should always have a positive mentality even when the going gets tough, for staff to follow suit and for the team to achieve its goals.

David stated that when they are unable to prioritise, they will never achieve their objectives, instead they will be stressed, have anxiety and end up making mistakes that will cost the institution. Besides being able to prioritise, he also urged them to develop good relations with staff by acknowledging the good they do and also teach them to take positive criticism for them to be better managers. In closing, David said that when one is a good leader and has managed to cement good relations with staff under his/her supervision, as a team they will yield positive results regardless of all circumstances, which may come their way.

Mr Vilakazi then expressed his appreciation to the team behind the excellent initiative.
