Police make arrests for firearms and drugs

The suspects, aged 25 and 60, are set to appear soon in the Bergville Magistrate's Court on charges of possession of dagga

Crime prevention activities led to two arrests on Thursday.

Having received information about an unlicensed firearm, members of Bergville police, Ladysmith Crime Intelligence and the Pietermaritzburg Mounted Unit went to a house in the Bergville area and recovered an unlicensed 9mm pistol with two live rounds of ammunition. A 40-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and will appear in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court soon.

Soon afterwards, the same police officers spotted a suspicious-looking individual walking along the road. The person was stopped and searched, and a bag of dagga was found. Further investigations saw the policemen going to a house in the Hoffental area, where a second suspect was arrested. A further six bags of dried dagga were recovered at the house. The suspects, aged 25 and 60, are set to appear soon in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of dagga. The dagga is valued at about R30,000.

KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the officers for the arrests and the recovery of the dagga. “We pride ourselves on these arrests, and the seizure of the dagga is another success stride in our endeavours to fight drug use and the illicit drug trade,” said Lt Ngobeni.
