Treverton College choristers and music students recently participated in the SASMT Eisteddfod in Pietermaritzburg and achieved a number of A symbols. The learners who got A+ (gold) for their performances were Vusi and Sine Fakazi, Nicky Palmer and Lara Gardner with their respective duets, Thembe Moyo with her beautiful rendition of “Feeling Good” and trio of songsters Sarah Mc Loughlin, Nontuthuko Madondo and Claire Mc Cubbin for their performance of a traditional English love song.

The A symbol winners (silver) for their singing performances were Grace Durham, Nico Britz, Sine Fakazi, Claire Mc Cubbin, Skye Hasseriis, Julia Guthrie and Tessa Vujovic (voice and guitar). There were also performances by College instrumentalists. A symbols were achieved by Nthabiseng Mahase (recorder), Claire Mc Cubbin (flute and piano), Oscar Haynes (violin) and Nqobile Mhlanga (piano). Sylvia Wu got an A- (bronze) for her piano piece. Many of the other singers and instrumentalists got either B or B+ for their performances.

College music teacher Judith Stiller believes that the true value of competitions at eisteddfod level is exposure to the talents of students from other schools. This enables students to evaluate their peers gifts and encourages them to improve their standard of performance. Mrs Stiller was extremely proud of the Treverton learners’ achievements and believes that there are many talented musicians at the school.
