Choppers offload combat-ready toops

Suddenly the choppers are down and the assault team are out fanning out in all directions from the chopper guns at the read.

The constant thudding of helicopter rotor blades echoed over Ladysmith as heavily-armed soldiers prepared to drop into the simulated warzone below. As the two Orynx helicopters neared the LZ, they nervously fiddled with the straps of their helmets and checked each other’s webbing…

Suddenly, the choppers were down and the assault teams fanned out in all directions from the chopper,  guns at the ready.

Watching them with a glint in his eye was Colonel Dixon, who helped prepare the troops for helicopter warfare.

Altogether three helicopters and hundreds of troops took part in yesterday’s helicopter training exercise, as 5SAI soldiers prepare for UN deployment later in the year. In keeping with the UN spirit, one of the helicopters sported the white colour associated with all UN vehicles. We wish the brave lads and lasses of 5SAI all the best as they get ready for the increasingly dangerous world of peace-keeping on the African continent.

Over the next few days, the troops will continue training and the helicopters will be heard both day and night.
