Working together to protect children

A captive audience listened to health talks, which were given by the Bruntville CHC team together with a team from the Health Systems Trust

National Child Protection Week (CPW) is commemorated in South Africa annually to raise awareness of the rights of children as articulated in the Children’s Act of 2005.
The Mpofana Clinic and Bruntville Community Health Centre team observed National Child Protection Week (CPW) on Wednesday, June 5.
This one-day event took place at the Bruntville Community Hall and started at about 11am and ended at 3pm.
Mr V Mpangase opened the event while Mrs H N Buthelezi the Operational Manager gave the purpose of this special day.
A captive audience listened to health talks, which were given by the Bruntville CHC team together with a team from the Health Systems Trust.
A delegation from the Blacksash rights organisation also graced the event.
During the course of the day power packed health talks were given by the Bruntville CHC team relating to child health.
Mr B Mtshali from the SAPS gave a talk on child’s rights and responsibilities, while social worker for Bruntville CHC Mrs N Zungu gave a talk on the responsibilities of parents and children at home. Mbali Mthethwa, a nutritionist for Bruntville CHC gave a talk on breast feeding and the importance associated to it.
Mrs Dlamini Clinical nurse for Bruntville CHC gave imperative spoke on child and women’s health. A community dialogue was also led by Mrs Khoza from the HST, which proved to be very fruitful. It enabled participation on key health issues directly affecting communities.
Beneficiaries where also screened for a range of health conditions like BP, HCT, Pap smears and flu vaccinations were also administered on site.
Condom distribution was also accelerated.
The Chief Executive Officer for Bruntville CHC Mrs NI Hlatshwayo went on to set the tone on a key health issue.
She demonstrated how to use the male condom.
The audience was fascinated by the act, which was very important, as women need to be empowered on how to insert male condoms as this is a sexual right. Despite the attendance the planning committee hailed the event a success.
