Stricter security measures for cemeteries

After two reports of security threats at the cemeteries in town, Umtshezi Municipality has agreed to put stricter measures in place to prevent another incident like this.
Last week the Estcourt News featured an article that told of an elderly Pietermaritzburg woman who was robbed of cash and threatened with her life whilst visiting a family member’s gravesite in Keate Street.
Another family left the Bank Road cemetery in terror after they were confronted by three men whose demeanour scared and traumatised the family.
Although a security guard is deployed at the cemetery, Municipal Manager Nonhlanhla Njoko said that “due to the large area of the cemetery, the officer situated at the cemetery did not hear or see anything.”
A suggestion from a reader that police step up patrols was presented to police spokesperson Captain JS Sokhela but no response was received at the time of going to print.
