Day scholars’ enjoy new day scholar room

Treverton College’s day scholar enrolment has increased in the last two decades.
The majority of these students “bus-in” every day from Nottingham Road, Rosetta and Estcourt.
Their average school day is a long one, as after the academic commitments of the morning into early afternoon, they are involved in many extra mural activities at cultural and sporting activities. This means, that they start their day with often three bags, one for books, one for a change of clothes and the final one for their sports equipment.
As they change classes throughout the day, they need a central point and lockers to store their possessions.
At the turn of the 20th century, a room in the formerly administrative block was allocated for their use as a Day Scholar room.
Over the years, it was equipped with a kettle and toasted-sandwich machines, comfortable seating and lockers.
As their numbers increased, the lockers were moved to the adjoining verandah…but the room was becoming too small.
The school responded by relocating classrooms and offices to provide the students with a bigger room.
The new day scholar room is large; and was the staff room in the 20th century and was used by the Dramatic Arts department in recent years.
That department has relocated to an adjoining classroom and the former day scholar room is now the office for Mrs Clare Botha who is head of the Dramatic Arts Department.
Buses cater for the day scholars’ busy days by providing transport after school and later in the afternoon after sports and cultural commitments.
Many of the day students have their midday meal in the College dining room with their boarder peers.
