Violent rapist gets 40 years

His reign of terror got him 40 years behind bars.

A violent rapist has been sentenced to 40 years behind bars, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Dundee Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
Ayanda Govender (23) from Glencoe was sentenced to 40 years’ imprisonment on one count of assault GBH, one count of kidnapping and two counts of rape.
Ayanda spotted the victim, who happened to be his ex-girlfriend, walking with some of her friends and boyfriend on the night of April 28, 2012 near the Glencoe Cemetery.
He attacked his victim’s boyfriend first, striking him over the head with a panga.
The violent assault left the boyfriend with severe injuries to his head and the cerebral tissue. With the boyfriend out of the way Ayanda then turned his attention to the victim, dragging her away from the scene into the nearby grass. The victim tried to attract the attention of police in a passing vehicle, but Ayanda struck her to the ground and forced her to stay out of sight. He threatened to kill her if she made a sound. Once the police van had passed, Ayanda continued his escapade of evil.
He took his victim to the Donald McHardy Dam where he brazenly phoned the victim’s mother, informing her that he was going to kill her daughter. He then stripped his victim naked and raped her. Despite her attempts to escape on numerous occasions she was overpowered by Ayanda, who was determined not to let her go. He then took her into a mountainous area where he raped her again the following day, continuing to threaten her with his knife. The victim’s ordeal came to an end when her grandmother, who had been searching frantically for her, found them coming back to town and took her granddaughter back home. A case of rape was opened soon after and handed over to the Dundee FCS unit. A case of assault GBH was also opened at the Glencoe police station by the boyfriend. He also informed people that his girlfriend had been abducted and named the suspect. Ayanda was arrested soon after and appeared in court. On March 13 he was sentenced in the Dundee Regional Court to 40 years’ imprisonment. The Dundee FCS Unit commended the victim for her clear recollection of events and her ability to assist in the investigation of this matter.
The unit ensured that justice was served, and proved why they have been voted the best FCS Unit in the province.
