Long queues snake outside Post Office

Some residents expressed their concern over a seeming lack of social distancing

Long queues have again formed out the Post Office (on Beaconsfield Street) by those hoping to receive the R350 special Covid-19 relief grant.
Some residents have commented on the lack of social distancing.

The SA Post Office says people arrive in the hope of getting the grant instead of waiting to be notified. Applicants are notified by SMS to come and collect their grant.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) says it has switched to an updated database that has led to the approval of an additional one million applicants for the R350 social relief grant.
SASSA has previously had problems allocating  the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants, most notably determining applicants that qualify and payment backlogs.

This month, the agency said it would use an updated database to reconsider applications made in May before subjecting them to an appeal process. This was after it discovered that the high number of rejections raised question

In a statement, SASSA says the newly-approved applicants drastically reduce the number of potential appeals. The grant will continue until October, according to the Government website.
