Daar is net een bank … but it needs help

“We wait anxiously for the monthly SASSA payouts to survive” – Wasbank shopkeeper

Wasbank is a town in the Umzinyathi District Municipality in Kwa-Zulu Natal. The village is 25km southwest of Dundee and takes its name from the Wasbank River.
That’s all you get if you type in Wasbank on the Internet and go to Wikipedia.

Farmers used to say ‘Daar is net een bank, Wasbank’ but right now the road markings are faded. Few shops are open. The once gracious railway station has been pulled apart brick by brick, the cattle and goats have the run of the town. Dumping is rife.

Sewer leaks and blockages are common as the village still relies on a ‘honey sucker’ to manually remove waste rather than a water borne sewer system.
So residents were eager to give Umzinyati Mayor, Petrus Ngubane, and his delegation, that arrived in the village to take on service delivery issues, a warm welcome.

A group of Extended Public Works Programme workers from Wasbank have been enrolled to see to sewer complaints and other issues. Residents like Zora Ndlovu and Terogo Ameen are very thankful. They first reported a sewage leak over a year ago.
