Lockdown lowdown – we have unlocked loads of hidden potential

Every day, a new recipe is shared, a clever hack is posted and some nifty DIY crafts are displayed

So, with the nationwide level 4 lockdown in full force, everyone has had a different experience due to their circumstances.

Our Token Indian divulged inside info on the takeover of the animals during this period and The Bowman imparted his insight on the revolution this lockdown has brought to us, but as for me, I offer a meagre bird’s eye view on this matter and here is my lockdown lowdown.

Journeys to work every morning were blissful and pretty boring, as lockdown meant fewer vehicles buzzing on our roads. On a normal day, only a few dared speed past the Daisy and a lone jogger was spotted every now and then. Journeys were pretty hassle-free, save for one day when I was stopped by a man in uniform.
This suave gentleman seemed to think newspapers are non-essential and quipped how one can’t eat them. My remark – that it can’t be eaten, but is rather food for your soul – was some of the roadside entertainment I have enjoyed.

The other entertainment was found in plentiful amounts in my hood. The inhabitants of my hood have adapted a new spin on social distancing: while the distance part is still kept, that doesn’t stop them from being social. Neighbours conversing from washing lines, over walls or even through locked gates are not an uncommon sight. In fact, it’s actually a routine. Many mornings, like clockwork, you hear, “Dori, hey Dori, what you doing? Come by the wall.”

Big ups to the neighbours for being innovative: line-to-line messenger will soon be trending. On the other hand, while innovation and entertainment levels have increased, relationship levels
have taken a dive. Lockdown has meant love being shut down for many couples and it’s sad to note that I have yet to come across a post on social media whereby girlfriends are missing their boyfriends or vice versa. If anything, I only see long paragraphs professing their yearning for tobacco and alcoholic products.

Now, while adhering to the President’s call for social distancing is admirable, the loyalty being shown to SABS and the South African Tobacco industry is also outstanding. On a positive note, the number of chefs, yoga instructors and DIY craftsmen has also increased; the lockdown has unlocked loads of potential talent.

Every day, a new recipe is shared, a clever hack is posted and some nifty DIY crafts are displayed. This is most beneficial to people like me, who are constantly on a quest for shortcuts to life’s daily duties, especially duties in the kitchen. And so as the lockdown is lifted to hopefully level 3 by the end of the month, every South African comes out of it with a kaleidoscope of new experiences, both good and bad. Hold onto these experiences and memories, as one day you will be able to reminisce with your children and grandchildren, and reiterate that staying at home, washing your hands and staying safe saved SA.
