Scammers use job offers to kidnap victims – SAPS
A 25-year-old woman was held for ransom after responding to a social media job advertisement.
Kidnappers are using social media to advertise jobs and lure in unsuspecting victims.
SAPS has urged job seekers not to fall for ‘suspicious advertisements’. Spokesperson for the police service, Captain Nqobile Gwala issued a warning after a 25-year-old woman was held for ransom after responding to such a social media job advertisement.
“The woman contacted the number in the hope of going for a job interview, and was told to meet her so-called interviewer at the Mariannridge Pool last Friday. She was confronted by five men and held in a clump of bushes, while a R20 000 ransom demand was made to her family.”
The matter was reported to police and a case was opened in at the Marianhill Police Station. Various units within SAPS conducted an operation which resulted in the woman being released by her captors. Police officials are still trying to hunt down the kidnappers.
“Those who are aware of employment scams or illegal employment activities, should immediately report such to the police,” concluded Capt Gwala.
