Owners of ‘unsightly’ properties can be charged – Dannhauser Municipality

"Owners will be then charged per square metre, for the area of grass cut by the municipality."

Dannhauser Municipality has called on residents to assist in keeping the town clean. Residents have often complained about overgrown grass and litter strewn streets.

Director of Community Services, Seva Naidoo, admitted the municipality had its own challenges, but also called on the public at large to play its part. Mr Naidoo highlighted numerous properties around town where long unsightly grass could be found.

He explained maintenance of the properties, which are privately owned, is the responsibility of the owners and they would be charged if the municipality was called in to cut the grass.

The municipality is now issuing warning letters to owners, giving them 14 days to attend to the matter.

“Failure to do so will cause the municipality to enforce its Prevention and Suppression of Health Nuisances by-law. Owners will be then charged per square metre, for the area of grass cut by the municipality.”

Mr Naidoo also urged residents to use the skip bins provided across the town and to avoid illegal dumping. Residents are encouraged to use the landfill site, which is in Durnacol.

Together with the assistance of the community, the municipality is confident the town can be kept clean.
