Protest over lack of water escalates in Dannhauser area

Reports indicate a 'toll gate' has been set up on the Nyanyadu road, charging vehicles R50 to pass.

A protest over the lack of water in the Nyanyadu area has seen roads blocked and members of the SAPS Public Order Policing (POP) Unit dispatched to the area.

The protests started on Monday, after some residents claimed they had not had access to water for over a year in mainly the rural areas falling under Dannhauser Municipality. However, the provision of water is the responsibility of Amajuba District Municipality.

Officials held a community meeting in the Fairbreeze area this week and steps were put in place to get water running again. Some community members reported they were able to collect water from stand pipes.

The protest seemed escalate yesterday however, with access to and from Magdalene Colliery blocked. Members of the POP Unit cleared the area, but it was reported this morning that protesters brandishing knobkerries had set up makeshift ‘toll gates’ on the road, demanding money from passing motorists. One motorist told the Courier the ‘fee’ is R50 per vehicle.

It is understood SAPS has again been deployed to the area to restore calm.
