How to get your child school ready

Important topics to cover with your child include safety and the after school arrangements.

With the new school year looming, some first-time learners or those relatively fresh in the classroom might be feeling overwhelmed.

Here are some tips to help children prepare to ‘hit the books’:

  • Talk to your child about the importance of school and point out all the positive aspects, such as making new friends and participating in sport and other activities.
  • Buy all the necessary supplies and stationery, and mark them with your child’s name (including pieces of the uniform and lunchboxes).
  • Write down need-to-know information, such as your contact details, and go over important safety information with your child.
  • Try to drop your child off at school on at least the first day, even if you can’t do it every day. If you plan to participate in any carpools, start organising a week or so ahead of time. A good place to start is with the school, to learn if there are learners who live in your area.
  • Figuring out where your child will go after school can be challenging, especially if both parents work. Start arranging after school activities or aftercare as soon as possible.
