The year – with all its trials and adversities – is almost at an end

After all the adversities which came with 2019, indulge in yourself but simply don't overdo it.

It’s that time of the year again, when everyone is jolly and in celebration mode. The festive season is upon us and this means splurging, splurging, splurging, at least for those who can afford to splurge on luxuries.

Think of it this way – there are millionaires and then penurious bosses who are tight-fisted when it comes to money. So which one are you?

That’s something to think about; as much as we must watch every cent which leaves our pockets, we all deserve a little spoiling, as 2019 has been a tough year for most of us. This is now the time to kick back and relax a little bit. If that means taking your family for a little holiday, do so. If it means going on a shopping spree (one you can afford), go for it, but just don’t overspend.

Remember that January will be long by comparison, so one must save as much as they possibly can. If we have not learned from past mistakes of spending all our bonuses in one go and being penniless come January, then we will never learn.

December is just like any ordinary month. Or maybe not, in terms of all the parties which take place, all the festivities and late nights at the beach or even in the comfort of your home.

Remember, December holidays are what you make of them – don’t succumb to peer pressure and spend money on meaningless braais and alcohol.

Think wisely as you plan your holidays. You don’t have to plan everything to the tee; you still need to let spontaneity play its part. In your budget, do put money aside for entertainment. After all the adversities which came with 2019, indulge in yourself but simply don’t overdo it.

Bear in mind that your salary for December must last you practically two months, as the next payday only comes at the end of January.

In ‘Jan-u-worry’, schools reopen, students go back to university, employees go back to work and everything will normalise except for the bank accounts, which will have a long wait before getting topped up again.

Enjoy the festive season wisely and responsibly. Let the count down to 2020 begin – let’s make the most of these few weeks of 2019 left.
