Carols, a star and Father Christmas set the scene for family service

The service, complete with a nativity scene, Father Christmas and a Star of Bethlehem, has become an annual event over the past three years.

Under a somewhat stormy sky, a large gathering of residents packed the grounds of Ingudlane Lodge on Saturday evening for a Christmas Carol Service, led by Brother Daniel.

The evening complete with a nativity scene (boasting real sheep), Father Christmas bringing gifts and a Star of Bethlehem, has become an annual event over the past  five years. Those who attended also donated toys which will be distributed to the less fortunate.

The Uelzen School Choir sang carols along with the Presbyterian and Methodist Church Choirs, while those in the audience, who were seated on hay bales, joined in holding candles as the sun plunged beneath a darkening horizon.

In the sky, Venus and Jupiter seemed closer than ever, perhaps indicative of the Star of Bethlehem which guided the three wise men to the newborn king. Astronomers call the alignment of the two planets the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter.

According to CBC’s Technology and Science website, this occurs at regular intervals of about three years and three months. Conjunctions are ‘good’ if the planets are far enough from the Sun to be observed easily after sunset or before sunrise, as was the case yesterday evening.
