Victor ready to lead Dundee’s Detectives Unit

Lt Col Mpungose is looking forward to working with residents and said his door is always open.

Newly appointed Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Victor Mpungose, is determined to bring innovation to the Dundee Detectives Unit. He brings a fresh approach and around 17 years of experience to this new post.

“I have new ideas I want to implement to get my unit up to standard. I am not at liberty to reveal them, however they are for the betterment of the station,” he explained.

Lt Col Mpungose now heads a team of 22 detectives and two administrative clerks, and as a self-proclaimed ‘relentlessly proactive leader’, he seeks respect and honesty from his colleagues.

“I am a strict person at home and work. When I give an instruction, I expect it to be done. I dislike people who don’t respect time.”

However, he emphasised he was not one to hold a grudge: “If I have a problem with a person, I prefer dealing with it there and then.”

Providing some personal background, Lt Col Mpungose said he was born in Melmoth, a small town in the King Cetshwayo District, and was educated at Mlokotho High School. He is also married with six children.

Lt Col Mpungose enjoys going to the gym and is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Newcastle, under the leadership of Pastor Nkonyane.

“I have a National Diploma in Police Admin. from UNISA and I have worked my way up since. I start working at the SAPS back in 2002 and have already worked at four police stations.”

Aiming to restore the public’s trust in the police service, Lt Col Mpungose said he looked forward to working with residents and said his door was always open.

“As a man, I do not let anything defeat me. If I stumble against an obstacle, I consult with other people who can assist me. My personality allows me to face conflicts here at the unit up front.”

His advice to future police officers is as follows: “Those who are determined to serve our country need to stay away from drugs and doing crime, because with a criminal record, obtaining any job is difficult.”
