‘Smokey’ sets graphic design world alight

Growing up 'addicted to video games and cartoons', Smokey wanted to replicate what he saw on screen.

Armed with just Photoshop and an idea, Ntutuko ‘Smokey’ Mdlalose is heating up the design world.

The former ML Sultan Glencoe Secondary School learner is currently an intern at the Northern Natal Courier, where he serves as a Graphic Designer. Growing up ‘addicted to video games and cartoons’, Smokey wanted to replicate what he saw on screen.

“I became a specialist at drawing superheros and anime characters.”

As he grew older, so did Smokey’s passion and after he left school, he studied Graphic Design and Web Development at a local college. His aim is to one day be a Senior Graphic Designer, but for now, Smokey is honing his skills and perfecting his art.

“When I’m in front of a screen, it just comes naturally. I do a bit of research on the topic at hand and the ideas just start flowing.”

In his spare time, Smokey likes to hang out with friends, watch movies and play games, and it’s from there he draws inspiration as well. He would love to design for animated movies or games in future and said he would jump at the chance if given the opportunity.

“Never give up. You never know what will happen unless you give it your all.”

Until that day his name pops up in the credits of a motion picture, you can see Smokey creating advertisements and posters on the local scene.
