Greek community makes pilgrimage to historic Glencoe church

The Saint Kyriaki Church on Black Street, Glencoe, is part of Dundee's Heritage Trail.

A large delegation representing the Greek community of the greater Durban area, made a pilgrimage to the Church of Saint Kyriaki in Glencoe this past weekend. Both local Northern KZN and Durban Greeks had the opportunity to attend Orthodox matins, Divine Liturgy and the service of the Artoklasia, sequence on Sunday at the Glencoe Greek Orthodox Church.

The service was conducted by Archimandrite Athanasios Poyiadjis of Durban. The Saint Kyriaki Church on Black Street, Glencoe, was built in 1902 as a Catholic Church. When the Diocese built a bigger church in Dundee, the Glencoe church fell into disuse. Following the death of Kiki Adalis in a car accident on 25 June 1990, Efstratios (Charlie) Adalis and Andreas (Andrew) Meli, with the support of Greek families in the northern KZN region, purchased the church. In 1992, with the blessing and supervision of Archbishop of the Archbishopric of Good Hope, Cape Town at the time, this church in Glencoe was converted to a Greek Orthodox Church.

“The generous support of the Greeks in this region has ensured the renovation, decoration and continued maintenance of this special church,” noted Father Athanasios. The day concluded with a bountiful lunch offered to the visitors.
