Orange Grove Dairy rebuild aims to meet Spring deadline

All hands are on deck to ensure the UHT factory is back on stream by October

The immediate aim of the Orange Grove Dairy rebuild is to meet the Spring deadline in time for the annual surge in demand for dairy products.

First stop is to have the  UHT (ultra-high temperature processing – long life milk) factory back on stream by October.

UHT products are the most highly sought-after of dairy supplies.

The factory is around 1 040 square metres in size, and will be merged with the storage facility of about 2 400 square metres.

The site is still been cleared following the fire.

Anton Lee, Orange Grove Production manager, said ‘working is continuing flat out following the devastating April 1 fire that gutted Orange Grove, destroying 16 000 square meters of the 17 000 square metres that comprised the dairy plant.

Most of the milk stock is currently being processed at dairies in the Midlands area, with some Gauteng dairies being utilised, and the former Dairy Day plant on the N3 near Howick, is still been used as Orange Grove’s distribution centre.

Mr Lee said the new-look Orange Grove Dairy could be ready in around six months.
“Using a clear plan formulated after the fire, we are utilising this tragedy to ensure new opportunities are explored. When all has been done, we will have a brand new Orange Grove.
“It is all about adding value to what we have done for nearly 100 years,” he concluded.
