Endumeni Mayor says power theft is draining municipal finances

"Imagine how many roads, pavements and other infrastructure we could rehabilitate with that stolen R18-million..."

Electricity theft, through illegal connections and meter tampering, is expected to have cost Endumeni around R18-million when the financial year closes on June 30.

“Mooi River was declared bankrupt because of rampant electricity theft,” explains Endumeni Mayor, Sduduzo Mdluli. “We do not want the same situation in Endumeni. There is an auditing company in place hired by Endumeni to check for tampered meters. We must assess the performance of this company to ensure the losses are drastically reduced.”

MayorMdluli said in the past, there were certain ‘no go’ areas for the auditing company, with Ward 3 in Sithembile being especially notorious. He says this has to change.

“Let there be no ambiguity. All meters will be checked and offenders treated accordingly. We have to cut these unacceptable losses. Imagine how many roads, pavements and other infrastructure we could rehabilitate with that stolen R18-million.”
