Local EFF members celebrate 10th anniversary

Party members are pleased at the rate at which the EFF is growing in the Uthukela District

On Wednesday last week (July 26), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members held a picket in King Street outside their offices as part of 10th anniversary celebrations. This was part of the build-up to the main event that was held at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday (July 29).

Regional chairperson Mbongeni Shange said they have every reason to celebrate the work they have done within the Uthukela District in the past 10 years.

Looking back to 2013 when the party was established, Shange said there was evidence that they were growing fast when they managed to get 7000 votes in the 2014 national elections, which were held just six months after the party was formed. He added that the impact of the EFF was also felt during the 2016 local elections, where they managed to obtain seven seats in a different municipality under the Uthukela District.

Noticing the pace at which the party was growing in the district, the national leadership allowed them to officially launch the district, as they had about 68 branches in 2018. That led to the first elective conference in the district. He continued that in the 2019 national elections, they managed to get 15,000 votes within the district.

Shange says they had another elective conference in 2021 (where he was elected as regional chairperson). Commenting on some highlights, “We have been the voice of the voiceless in the district. We intervened in the Estcourt area, where farmers were abusing farm dwellers. We also intervened in clinics based in Estcourt and Bergville that were treating patients badly and have since changed.”

He added that going into the 2021 local elections, their plan was either to win the municipality or have it as ‘hung’. “We were happy to see that in all four municipalities, including the district municipality, no party had received 50+1 after the elections,” said Shange.

Local EFF members also headed to the main event, departing on Friday for the event on Saturday.
