Pigeons zip through the air to win races

The winning pigeons flew at speeds in excess of 70km/h

Last Saturday (July 1), the open pigeons raced from Middelburg (297km) and Brandfort (323km).

The Middelburg pigeons were released at 07:30. The winner was clocked by Lewis Hay at 11:34, three minutes ahead of Mark Maharaj in Weenen. The winning pigeon flew an average speed of 73km/h.

The first Brandfort pigeon was clocked by Eric Holder Jnr in Bergville at 11:32, beating Rob Irons in Winterton by one second. The first Ladysmith pigeon was clocked by Lewis Hay at 12:07. The winning pigeon flew an average speed of 79km/h.

The full results are as follows:

Middelburg open (28 pigeons): Lewis Hay 1,4,5,6,8,9,13; Mark Maharaj (Weenen) 2,3,7,10; Emmanuel Maharaj (Weenen) 11,14,15; Rob Irons (Winterton): 12.

Brandfort open (105 pigeons): Eric Holder Jnr (Bergville) 1,5,8,15,16,26,27; Rob Irons (Winterton) 2,3,4,9,10,11,14,17; Lewis Hay 12,18,19,22,23,24,28,29; William Faurie 7,30; Emmanuel Maharaj (Weenen) 13,25; Jimmy Hanlon 20,21.

This weekend, the yearling races will be from Warden (110km) and Senekal (210km).
