Ward 29 by-election underway

The voting stations opened at 08:00 and will close at 21:00

Today (June 28) is the day that all political parties in Alfred Duma Local Municipality have been waiting for… The reason is that the Ward 29 by-election is underway.

According to the IEC, this ward will be contested by one independent candidate, Phasika Nsele; Mxolisi Innocent Mkhonto from the ANC; Velaphi Madondo from the EFF; Bongani Nicholas Madondo from the IFP; and Nkosiyazi Cyril Mkhize from the UCM.

The ward was previously represented by the IFP and became vacant as a result of former councillor Phasika Nsele’s membership being terminated by the party.

The voter turnout in this ward at the 2021 Municipal Elections was 65.09%. This is a highly-contested ward in Alfred Duma Local Municipality.

Should the ANC win the by-election, they will be one step closer to taking over the municipality from the IFP, who are currently in power.

On the other side of the coin, should the IFP win, this would mean that the status quo remains.
