N11 closed due to Charlestown protest action

Motorists are being urged to avoid traveling between Newcastle and Volksrust via the N11 after protesters in Charlestown blocked off the road.

It’s been reported that four trucks were pulled over and set on fire since the protest action started late last night. Protesters are also allegedly throwing rocks at motorists attempting to pass through.

The road is closed and traffic is currently being diverted from the N11 to the P211 (Memel road to Johannesburg) as the situation remains volatile and hostile.

All emergency services, including RTI and SAPS, are on scene trying to control the situation.

This is a developing story and will be updated as soon as more information is received.
