Road open as strikers disperse

Traffic can now pass through, but motorists are urged to be cautious

This morning (March 23), Public Safety officials had to close Lyell Street due to uThukela staff protesting and burning tyres.

The protesters have since dispersed and the road is now open to traffic.

The staff said they are striking because management broke certain agreements that were made after the last industrial action. This is the second day in a row that striking workers have brought uThukela to a standstill.

A large police presence has been monitoring the strike.

After numerous attempts to contact uThukela for comment, none has been received.

Motorists travelling in this direction are advised to exercise caution, as some of the tyres are still in the road.
