Committee elected to boost tourism

The Community Tourism Organisation aims to market and publicise tourism prospects

Stakeholders in the local tourism industry agreed that a Community Tourism Organisation (CTO) must be formed in order to market the local tourism prospects.

A CTO is facilitated and guided by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs (EDTEA); as well as the local municipality; and owned and managed by the community. Its members actively work towards marketing and publicising tourism.

At meetings held last year, the role of the CTO was explained by EDTEA staff and a decision to elect a committee was taken. The CTO has since been formed and is called the ‘Drakensberg and Midlands Tourism Organisation’.

Deleene Wagner is the chairperson. She invites all tourism-related businesses and individuals to join the organisation.

“Our objective is to promote tourism to the Inkosi Langalibalele Municipality area – namely Estcourt and surrounds, and Weenen and surrounding areas. Membership is minimal, so this is a great opportunity to become part of our CTO and be marketed jointly as a destination,” she said.
