Farmer’s house damaged during storm

Over R1 million worth of damage was done in the heavy hail storm

Farmer Herman Goldschagg, who has a farm near the Blue Bank Road, suffered damages to his house during the heavy storm on Saturday night (February 25).

One of the vehicles that was damaged.

Herman was in the kitchen when he and his family first heard the wind begin to howl outside. They did not expect the storm to be as bad as it was though, and did not take any precautions. In the blink of an eye, huge hailstones started crashing down – bigger than golf balls.

Some of the damage that was done.

“It (hail) hit so hard that it even stripped the bark off trees, not to mention breaking all the windows and doors,” explained Herman. He says that over R1 million worth of damages was done, that now needs to be repaired. 1001 chickens were killed, three vehicles were written off and another 14 damaged, and two new buildings on the farm were completely destroyed.

The hail found in the kitchen.

The farm was flooded as well, due to the heavy downpour. Herman is, however, thankful that no one was injured in the storm. “Even though I am insured, not everything is insurable,” he concluded.
