Double murder in the CBD

The couple was shot and killed while seated in their vehicle in Albert Street

A couple was killed while seated in their vehicle in the central business district (CBD) yesterday (January 4).

According to police, an unknown number of gunmen opened fire on the couple, who were parked in Albert Street after 18:00.

“The assailants fled the scene in a get-away vehicle. The victims sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were declared dead on the crime scene,” commented police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan.

He added that at this stage the motive for the double murder is unknown.

Estcourt detectives are investigation two counts of murder.

Democratic Alliance (DA) Uthukela Constituency Head Uthukela Constituency Head Alf Lees MP has issued a statement offering condolences to the families and strongly condemning the murders.

“The question to be asked is why it seems that none of the perpetrators of these murders in public places in Estcourt during daylight with thousands of the lives of the public put at risk have not been charged, convicted and sent to prison for life? What action have the police taken to collect evidence and make arrests? The DA will submit a parliamentary question to Bheki Cele, the Minister of Police, to establish what progress has been made to charge the perpetrators of murders in Estcourt over the past five years,” he said.
