Free first aid training for locals

The accredited first aid course will assist the residents in their communities and work environment

Knowing how to perform basic first aid has become a necessity in many organisations. With this in mind, the Gift of the Givers hosted a First Aid Level 1 training programme for locals. 88 people attended the two-day workshop that was held on November 9 and 10 at the Forderville Primary School Hall.

The training was facilitated by Medi Response from Johannesburg. Those who were invited for the training were from schools, institutions and non-profit organisations. They learnt basic first aid skills that could assist them when faced with a medical emergency or life-threatening situation.

Gift of the Givers Estcourt community liaison Jaaved Khan said the need for first aid training for locals was essential.

“We work closely with Hospice and Ithembalethu Outreach Project, and they have caregivers on the ground in the rural areas that work with the sick and elderly. It would bring them and the community great benefit through having this kind of training, especially in emergencies. Schools were invited, as it is now compulsory for schools to have certified first aiders on the premises,” he said.

The Gift of the Givers Foundation embarked on a First Aid Level 1 Accredited Training Programme at the beginning of August and has trained over 700 people in Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State. The foundation aims to train 2000 people throughout the nine provinces by the end of the year.

“This vital training is important in educating our citizens by giving them the necessary skills in dealing with basic medical emergencies. This training empowers our most vulnerable in society, especially when it comes to basic healthcare education, which is vital in saving lives – especially in our rural settings whereby access to medical facilities and ambulance services is limited,” said Gift of the Givers Foundation Head of Education Training & Quality Assurance Ahmed Bham.

“The accredited first aid course also assists communities in ruling out many myths about basic treatment in medical emergencies and helps in the stabilising of medical and trauma emergencies, while waiting for the necessary medical assistance to arrive. This also empowers our participants with a first aid qualification that is recognised in the employment space and can be added as an additional skill on their CV. Our training empowers the youth, community leaders, religious leaders, community healthcare workers, teachers, etc, which forms an important and integral part of communities,” he added.
