Assault rifle sized in anti-crime blitz
A joint intelligence-driven operation proved successful
Police in the Loskop area have been hard at work ridding the area of unlicensed firearms.
They had another round of success last week when an Intelligence-driven operation was held on Wednesday.
During the operation, officers were deployed in Kwa Vala, Emakekeni and eMadolobeni, where three firearms and ammunition were recovered and three people arrested.
“A 37-year-old suspect was arrested with a shotgun, a 19-year-old was arrested with a 9mm pistol and ammunition, and a 25-year-old was arrested with an AK-47 assault rifle and ammunition. Needless to say, none of the firearms were licensed,” commented police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan.
This operation was conducted by the joint forces of the Uthukela Crime Intelligence Unit, Amangwe Visible Policing Unit and personnel from the South African National Defence Force.
Uthukela District Commissioner of Police, Major General Jabulani Khumalo, has commended the officers on the recoveries and arrests.
“Officers in the Uthukela District will continue to stop the proliferation of firearms in the district,” he said.
