Business robber behind bars

One of the suspects is still at large

One of three men who robbed a store in Illing Road last month (August) has been sentenced to hard time.

The three men entered the store just after it had opened for business.

They immediately pulled out firearms and held the staff at gunpoint. Their intention was to rob the store of cellphones, which they began packing.

Police received an anonymous call and officers from the Ladysmith K9 Unit responded swiftly.

As they approached the premises, they were met with a hail of bullets. The officers returned fire and two suspects were shot. One was fatally wounded, while the other was later admitted to a local hospital under police guard.

The third suspect managed to escape during the shoot-out and is still at large.

Sergeant BX Zwane of Ladysmith Detective Services was tasked with the investigation.

The suspect in custody appeared in court, where bail was opposed. Last Friday (September 23), Andile Brian Mazibuko (21) was sentenced in the Ladysmith Regional Court to 16 years’ imprisonment. He faced charges of robbery with aggravated circumstances, and pointing a firearm.
