Methodist Church women celebrate one another on Women’s Day

Women from the Vryheid circuit Methodist Church held a function for Women’s Day in Bhekuzulu.

Women from the Vryheid circuit Methodist Church held a function for Women’s Day in Bhekuzulu.

The ministry, which is led by Reverend Gwala and his wife, tackled topics such as the role of a woman in the family, the significance of Women’s Day, facing life after the passing of a partner, the challenges of young motherhood, and living a healthy lifestyle.

Dr Mhlungu spoke of the role of a woman in the family and said, “God created everything and said it is all good, but when He created a man, He spoke and said it is not good for a man to be on his own, so I will make his own helper who is like him and that is how Eve came to life. A woman was made to be a helper.”

Dr TP Nkosi expounded on the issue of facing life after the death of a spouse, drawing from her own life experiences after she lost a loved one. “It is never nice to face the storm, especially when you are alone. It is also heartbreaking to lose a loved one, more especially a partner, because all the plans you had with that person turn into your plans alone. The person you came to help is no more and you are left to deal with the children and his family; you cannot go home because you are married to that family.’’ She urged women to read a scripture in the Bible from Matthew 14 that talks about the storm of life.

Zama spoke about the challenges they face as pastor’s children. “People tend to think we are not human, nor are we immune from making mistakes. Being a pastor’s child is a ‘calling’ one did not invite. People judge you all the time, but we urge the congregation to allow us to make mistakes and help us by listening to us; make it easy for us to hold a decent conversation without judgement and help us to achieve our goals.’’

Mrs Gwala concluded by highlighting the issue of gender-based violence (GBV). “Wherever we, as women, speak about GBV and protest with our boards, it falls on deaf ears. Now it’s time to act as women, because justice has failed us. Women have the power to do things and put a stop to it if they stand together.’’

One of the organisers of the day, Mrs Mthethwa (who works alongside G Mdletshe and DM Khumalo), mentioned that it was a very productive day, as they benefited from one another. She emphasised that children must be loved and treated equally in a household. She thanked the women for attending, including Rev Gwala and his wife, the executive committee, Miss V Mthethwa, Mrs Sangweni, matron of Vryheid District Hospital, Mrs Ziqubu and Nhlakanipho Hadebe.
