Ward 5 councillor focuses on women development

A female-owned supermarket will be established in the ward

Ward 5 Councillor Mabutho Mngadi recently met with the women of his ward in order to revive their role within the community. A women’s development seminar was hosted by the councillor at Zithei Lodge in Ezakheni.

Mngadi says the purpose of the event was not just to celebrate Women’s Month, but to encourage ladies to reclaim their ‘rightful place’ within the community.

“We believe that women can play a huge role in uplifting the local economy. To have more women actively participating in the business sector will help to alleviate poverty and unemployment, which seems to be the main challenge facing our communities,” said Mngadi.

One of the highlights of the day was the resolution to form a co-operative, directed by local women, which will be aimed at running a supermarket in Ezakheni Ward 5.

Legal practitioner LP Dlalisa, who was one of the key guest speakers at the seminar, committed to helping the women establish the co-operative, free of charge. According to Mngadi, they expect to have up to 200 women involved in this initiative.

Women turned up in their numbers to attend the seminar and were delighted with what the meeting resolved to do.

“I am a councillor who believes in community development in all sectors. I wish that more people could get behind that vision and adapt to it. Together, we could reach greater heights,” concluded Cllr Mngadi.
