12 local runners to take on Comrades Marathon

It’s less than three weeks to the ‘Ultimate Human Race’, better known as the Comrades Marathon, where runners will take on 90 gruelling kilometres from Pietermaritzburg to the Moses Madiba Stadium in Durban. Vryheid Athletic Club has 12 runners who will hit the road in this year’s downhill battle. On Thursday evening, the club celebrated these runners by having a social gathering to show them support. Sponsors came aboard and spoiled them with some necessary ‘goodie bags’ and running shirts.

Ferdinand van Niekerk delivered a message via Skype, with a Biblical message to inspire the runners. ‘Living within you is the Christ who floods you with the expectation of glory’ was the crux of his message. Melissa Scheepers, Richard Scheepers, Amanda Vergottini, Hein Potgieter, Paula Small, Patrick Mbongiseni, Mcebisi Msezane (novice), Lincoln Noko (novice), Mandla Mnisi, Alfred Mpanza, Simphiwe Buthelezi and Robert Masimango will represent Vryheid on August 28 in the Comrades. Good luck to these runners; Vryheid will be cheering for you!
