Historic site in a sad state

Rubbish is strewn all around this historic site

Tucked away at the end of Alexandra Street is a tribute to British soldiers – a historic monument called the Garden of Remembrance. The remains of soldiers who were buried in scattered graves were relocated to this site in the 1960s. Unfortunately, this piece of history is now littered with illegal dumping.

The Garden of Remembrance, as well as the open field and road close to it, has been an illegal dumping hot-spot for many years.

Heaps of domestic and garden waste, as well as building rubble, can be seen in the area.

A resident, who spoke out about the illegal dumping after seeing last week’s article regarding the rubbish at the Bank Road cemetery, says she is disgusted that people would dump in a place of historic significance that could be promoted as a tourist site.

With views overlooking the Bushman’s River, the residents adds that the Garden of Remembrance could be an idyllic spot for intrepid tourists, but the illegal dumping is sure to dissuade them.

“The place is a mess! Is this how we protect our historic sites? It’s disgusting and it’s time people started taking care of our town. A good place to start would be our tourism sites,” commented the resident, who asked not to be named.
