Woman falls through manhole cover

After this terrifying ordeal, the resident would like to advise other people to be vigilant when walking around

With 15 stitches to her leg, Charlotte McFadden is just grateful that ‘it was not a child or an elderly person’.

The deep gash on her right leg, just below the knee, is a painful reminder of an incident that took place on Saturday (March 26).

Ms McFadden (54) had accompanied her daughter to a car wash in the CBD; a place they had supported often. However, in the blink of an eye, Ms McFadden suddenly fell through a manhole cover.

“I didn’t even know what had happened. I was shocked,” she relates.

After she was removed from the hole, Ms McFadden’s blood-soaked pants were lifted up to reveal a deep slash.

The family was allegedly told that the manhole cover was recently damaged after a motorist drove over it.

With help from staff at the business, she was rushed to Estcourt Hospital, where an X-ray was taken before the wound was cleaned and stitched.

“The wound is 7cm long and the flesh was cut to the bone. I have to live with the scar now. The doctor advised me to keep me leg elevated until the stitches are out next week,” Ms McFadden explains.

After this terrifying ordeal, the resident would like to advise other people to be vigilant when walking around.

“I went through terrible pain and wouldn’t want this to happen to anyone. I could have lost my leg or this could have happened to a child or an elderly person. To the municipality and business owners, wake up and start looking at where there are hazards,” Ms McFadden says.

She would like to thank the doctor and staff at Estcourt Hospital for the efficient service rendered on Saturday.
