ESTCOURT KZN: Keeping the green fingers alive

During the programme individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds in the uThukela district received further training after an initial phase which took place in December 2021

On February 16, the Al-Imdaad Foundation in partnership with the Office of KwaZulu-Natal Premier, uThukela District and the Department of Agriculture, hosted a delegation of gardeners for follow-up training as part of the One Home One Garden project.

During the programme individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds in the uThukela district received further training after an initial phase which took place in December 2021.

Gardeners who had already started their own plots had the opportunity to address the challenges they had faced and received advice from the Al-Imdaad Foundation Garden team.

Al-Imdaad Foundation HOD for South African projects Abed Karrim thanked attendees saying, “We thank you all for coming to Al-Imdaad Foundation and being part of this partnership. A partnership of food security, a partnership to give all of you an understanding of One Home One Garden. If you notice it is a follow up, it is a mentorship to make sure that this food security becomes a success in uThukela.”

Mrs Sibindi, co-ordinator for uThukela District’s food security programme said, “We would like to appreciate the follow-up training that was done today, which will assist the gardeners, since we had challenges in the food production that we have been doing. Due to the high rainfall that happened a lot of them (the plants) were yellowish.”

To address these challenges, the Al-Imdaad Foundation provided the gardeners with complimentary worm juice liquid that could be used to fertilise soils that had been depleted during the heavy rains.

The attendees were also trained in producing organic insecticide sprays and on the correct methods of application. Attendees learned practically with direction from Al-Imdaad Foundation’s Garden team.

Al-Imdaad Foundation One Home One Garden co-ordinator Mubeen Peer said, “We hope the beneficiaries that have received training will go back and practice these methods of gardening so that they will not only be uplifting and sustaining themselves but also their communities.”
