Water levels decreasing at a steady pace in town

The K9 Unit, Search & Rescue teams and the Al-Imdaad Foundation played a crucial role in the flooding

It was chaotic today (January 17) in the low-lying CBD, as most of the roads were still closed due to flooding.

The flooding affected most of the businesses and homes located in Lyell Street, Queen Street, King Street and Forbes Street. Shops were flooded, with some being more affected than others.

Today, the impact of the road closures was felt by motorists and pedestrians alike. Traffic going in and out of town was diverted to Murchison Street, which then led to traffic congestion.

Public Safety officials were seen from the early hours of the morning until late, helping to direct traffic at various intersections, as robots are not working.

The K9 Unit, Search & Rescue teams and the Al-Imdaad Foundation played a crucial role in the flooding, as they used rubber dinghies to rescue those who were trapped in flooded houses and businesses. Police officers were also seen helping pedestrians to cross over from Forbes Street to Queen Street.

The water level readings in the morning were as follows:

In the morning at 07:00: Qedusizi Dam – 13.0m; Soofie bridge – 8.0m.

At midday (12:00): Qedusizi Dam – 12,8m; Soofie bridge – 8.0m.

In the afternoon at 16:40: Qedusizi Dam – 12,3m; Soofie bridge – 7.85m.

In the CBD, water levels in the roads were slightly decreasing this afternoon.
