Ladysmith KZN: uThukela hands over water infrastructure

As soon as the project is completed, there will be enough water for the whole Besters community

uThukela District Speaker Cllr PG Strydom – accompanied by PMU Manager Mr S Zikalala, Special Programmes Manager Mr B Mkhize and other officials – visited Ward 26 in the Besters area under Alfred Duma Local Municipality yesterday (October 13).

The purpose of the visit was to monitor the steel tank and reticulation project constructed by Sydwalt Construction. The steel tank consists of six communal stand pipes.

Mr Zikalala clarified the challenges associated with the delay of this project and said that his team had experienced a few technical problems. He pointed out that the community can use water from the new infrastructure, as it has been tested and is ready for consumption.

Cllr Strydom reiterated these sentiments and emphasised that uThukela understands water challenges within the community. She then gave her assurance that as soon as the project is completed, there will be enough water for the whole Besters community.

Later on in the day, Cllr Strydom and the team visited the Emaromeni area, where she introduced a solar panel system water pump which consists of a 10,000-litre JoJo tank containing natural water, with five communal stand pipes. This was also installed by Sydwalt Construction as per a plea to the mayor by the community.

Community members are pleased about the development and applauded the mayor for attending to their request because, for decades now, they have been struggling with water shortages in the area.
