Ladysmith KZN: Fire hydrant in De Wet Street non-operational for over a year

"Who will be held responsible for damages or lives lost?"

It has been a whole year and the fire hydrant at the corner of Reitz and De Wet Street has still not been attended to. This fire hydrant, which is in the vicinity of Monument Primary School, is not in working order at the moment. On the contrary, the apparatus has been ‘uprooted’ and is just lying on its side on the pavement.

Residents in the area ask what will happen if a fire breaks out at one of the houses or the school. “Fat lot of good it is now, just lying there! Who will be held responsible for the damage to property or, heaven forbid, if lives are lost in the blaze?” fumed one concerned resident who asked that he remain anonymous.
