ESTCOURT KZN: Artist takes on a personal project

“I worked on the model of the statue from a picture, but my vision has guided me through the process”

Artistic talent has been an inherent quality in Inul Brijmohan’s family. Both his father and brother were artists, and he is a qualified commercial artist who has been leaving his creative mark on countless signs and graphics in and around Estcourt.

Recently, Mr Brijmohan (61) has taken on a more personal project; one that was sparked in his heart and is taking shape on his workbench at his home office. He is now busy filling and chiselling a Shiva murthi (statue), which is fast becoming one of his beloved projects. Mr Brijmohan says he always had a desire to create a Shiva murthi.

“I was encouraged by my family, who said I was definitely capable of bringing this dream to life. I knew I could do it and I wanted to do it, so I put my mind to it and began,” explained Mr Brijmohan.

The statue was started on August 23, with pieces of wire to create the shape.

Thereafter, cement filled the wire structure and Mr Brijmohan began the intricate task of carving the statue by hand.

“I worked on the model of the statue from a picture, but my vision has guided me through the process,” he said.

In between work appointments and after hours, he continues to fine-tune the Shiva murthi. Mr Brijmohan plans to place the completed statue in a water feature at his home, saying that friends and family would not have to travel far to experience the splendour of a Shiva murthi.

“Lord Shiva is the creator and has inspired me to make this creation,” he says.
