Ladysmith KZN: ‘100 Steps’ neglected and dangerous, says resident

The area has become a prostitutes camp and a hideout for criminals

A resident who owns a house that borders the ‘100 Steps’ shortcut says he is bitterly disappointed and afraid due to the state of this footpath. The homeowner says the area has fallen into rack and ruin over the years, and is simply not safe anymore.

The hillside is dark at night, as none of the lights are working anymore. The municipality put up one floodlight which doesn’t cover even halfway because of the tall, overgrown trees and bushes in the area.

Homes bordering the broken-down path have had break-ins, as criminals jump over the rickety fence erected along the ‘100 Steps’ and into people’s yards.

It is also said that schoolchildren secretly smoke there in the mornings and that the area has become a prostitutes camp at night.

The IFP’s Harald Schirge and Cllr Abbas Warasally met with the concerned resident on Tuesday morning (August 31) and had a walk around the area. Cllr Warasally said he had referred the matter to the relevant unit in the municipality and they had committed to close the ‘100 Steps’ as soon as possible.
