Ladysmith KZN: Regional Hospital security guards on strike

The employees say they have not been paid for 2 months

The security guards at Ladysmith Regional Hospital embarked on a strike today (August 27). It is alleged that since the company started working there two months ago, they have not paid their staff. The employees are saying they can’t even get hold of the office, since the numbers they were given do not exist.

A concerned employee said, “We have been struggling ever since this company came in. At first, it was the issue of the uniform. We had to share the reflector vests because the company could not provide enough. Now we are fighting for our salaries. Yesterday, three employees were paid half of the money owed to them, and the rest still have not received anything.”

SATAWU organiser in the region Siyathemba Mbambo said that today (August 27), they will be engaging with the employees to establish more facts.

Ladysmith Regional Hospital spokesperson Thabo Sithole said they know about the issue concerning the private security company. “We have reported the matter to our head office, since they are responsible for the hiring of private security companies.”

Sithole added that the hospital would like to assure the community that KZN Security (belonging to the Department of Health) is still working, as they are not affected by the strike.
