Vryheid KZN: Ncome celebrates Women’s Month in style

This gathering comes after a sexual tape that went viral and dented not only the image of the centre, but women in general

The women of the Ncome Management Area celebrated Women’s Month in style through an ‘Indaba’ that was aimed at encouraging females to ‘fix each other’s crown without telling the whole world about how broken it is’. This gathering comes after a sexual tape that went viral and dented not only the image of the centre, but women in general. These women then decided that something had to be done to restore their dignity by talking about some of the factors that may have led to the incident. The Indaba was also aimed at encouraging women to rise up and be part of society and the business world, rather than feeling inferior.

Delivering the message of the day, Rev Zwelethu Nzuza started off by reminding everyone that it was through the efforts of the 1956 group of women who marched to the Union Buildings that women are now treated as equals to men. “Statistics show that four in 10 women are sexually assaulted every day in South Africa; and demographics indicate that only 32% of women are working in the country, whereas women make up over 50% of the total population,” said Nzuza.

Rev Nzuza shared this information with these ‘queens’ to remind them where they come from, where they are currently, and about the road that lies ahead. “Allow me to say that real queens fix each other’s crowns. Forget about competing against each other, but rather against yourselves, because you will lose sight of your own achievements if you focus on the achievements of others. Rather speak TO each other and not ABOUT each other,” emphasised Nzuza.

Area Co-ordinator: Development & Care Ms Siphokazi Mazwi echoed the words of Rev Nzuza by urging women to be part of the process of change in society in both good and bad times. “During this year – where we celebrate the life of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke through the theme ‘Realising Women’s Rights’ and our own theme of the day, which is ‘Fixing Each Other’s Crown’ – be a woman who leaves a mark and not a scar on another,” said Mazwi.

Head of Medium B Correctional Centre Mrs Busisiwe Zondo said she was well aware of the fact that offenders are also human and that their feelings and charms are not imprisoned. “We know that behind the orange uniform are potential husbands and loving boyfriends, but we must not lose sight of our ethical behaviour and the mandate of the department,” said Zondo.

Zondo went on to urge women to be bold and outshine all obstacles by developing themselves and looking for business opportunities to make money so that they are financially independent. “Don’t be a woman who holds a grudge and gossips all the time, but be a woman who grabs opportunities that will help you grow. Aspire to be managers and area commissioners as well; the sky is always the limit as long as the attitude is correct,” concluded Zondo.
