ESTCOURT KZN: Fierce fires flare up in Frere – arson suspected

"This was one of the “most difficult and destructive fires we have had in recent years”

Fire fighters and community members came together to fight two fierce fires in Frere yesterday (July 21).

According to Umtshezi Fire Protection Association (UFPA) chairperson, this was one of the “most difficult and destructive fires we have had in recent years.”

At about 2pm UFPA was alerted to the fires and immediately dispatched two fire fighting units as well as additional members as support.

“An initial hard attack was made to save bales of hay, which are vital for winter food for animals. Sadly, most were lost due to the extreme speed the fire was moving. A major response from all our members helped to put in various back burns to stop the blaze. Sadly hundreds of bales, a large portion of land as well as lands of winter feed were lost. A centre pivot was severely damaged,” explained Mr Blaker.

Thankfully the fast moving fire narrowly missed a homestead by less than 100 meters.

“The cause of the fire is unknown but been treated with suspicion of arson,” commented Mr Blaker.

He was also appreciative for the team effort in quelling the flames.

“I would like to thank all our members for such a big response of vehicles and tractors. Our unity as a community showed today. I would also like to thank Naeem Khan from the Al-Imdaad Foundation for dispatching a water tanker to assist,” he said.
