NEWCASTLE KZN: Community grateful for protection, but responders still on high alert

While the situation is said to still be volatile, sources state that routes in and out of Newcastle are currently quiet.

Residents have expressed pride and gratitude for the many who kept watch over Newcastle last night.

Security companies, volunteer crimefighters and local law enforcement kept vigil overnight and patrolled through town, joined by groups of determined community members desperate to limit looting and destruction caused by violent protests in the area.

The combined effort last night saw a large crowd of rioters/looters chased away from the Newcastle Mall. Teams also intervened with numerous incidents in areas including Arbor Park, Barry Hertzog Park and Lennoxton.

While the situation is said to still be volatile, sources state that routes in and out of Newcastle are currently quiet. Most stores and supermarkets are currently closed amid the threat of further protest/looting action.

A feedback and planning meeting will take place this afternoon, where safety and security roleplayers will discuss the situation and chart additional plans to safeguard Newcastle.

Residents are urged to join local WhatsApp groups and stay informed – information will be updated as the situation evolves. Stay home, stay safe.
