NEWCASTLE KZN: Communities remain on alert for further looting

Residents state they are prepared to 'mobilise at the slightest indication that there may be trouble'.

According to reporters in the field, residents remain on guard at strategic points across Newcastle.

Groups of community members, comprising owners and staff of security companies, members of the Community Policing Forum and concerned residents, are currently monitoring for suspicious activity and vehicles and state they are prepared to ‘mobilise at the slightest indication that there may be trouble’.

Reporters indicate town is quiet at the moment, with business activity ceased. Some malls are cordoned off with tape and under watch by security teams, and areas which are usually busy like taxi ranks are ‘spookily empty’.

One of the community groups told reporters a Boundary Road business was looted earlier in the day, and there was an attempted break-in at a Murchison Street store shortly before 4pm.

Residents should remain on alert and keep themselves informed about the situation.
